| ABOUT THE BREED SOCIETY
The Clun Forest Sheep Breeders Society was formed in 1925, to secure the purity of the breeds’ lineage and fixity of type. A flock book was published each year until the present day.
Over the past 80 years the breed has retained all the positive attributes, which made it popular worldwide, the only difference being that the ears are carried slightly higher.
Since the formation of the Society and due to the enthusiasm and interest of the breeders, the Clun Forest Sheep have been exported worldwide.
Over the years fashions and trends have changed the way in which we eat and how we live. This has affected the requirements of the butchers or more importantly the supermarkets who have until recently been the major supplier of meat. As eating habits have changed it has had a huge impact on the breeds of sheep used for commercial meat production, this in turn has affected many of our traditional breeds of sheep, the Clun Forest being one of them.
Recent trends are for flavour and local foods thus turning back towards our traditional breeds. with it flavoursome lamb being lean and cost effective to produce on any terrain, the Clun Forest meets this requirement.
Traditional breed meat is now very much sort after and consumer interest is again leaning towards the local butchers shop where you can often purchase your lamb by breed name.
Members of the Society are always happy to answer any of your questions about this ancient and hardy breed.
